Daily Devotion: October 23rd 2021

Saturday October 23rd

Read: Matthew 6:19-34

Learn:  In this section of scripture there is almost an immeasurable amount of wealth that we can draw from it. Were admonished by Jesus not to store treasures up here on earth, but to place them in Him where they they will remain forever. Then, in verse 24, Jesus gets straight to the point and says that we cannot have two masters (God or money), for we will either hate the one and love the other. How true is this!? This is a word picture in slave terms. A slave couldn’t serve two masters, it just wasn’t how it worked. Neither can we. We so often place our “happiness” or rather our comfort over our service to Christ. We think that if we serve Jesus like he is calling us, then we will lose out. But this is so contrary to what this section of scripture tells us. Just a few verses later in verse 31 Jesus says, “therefore do not be anxious, saying ‘what shall we eat? Or ‘what shall we drink?’ or ‘what shall we wear?’”. We aren’t supposed to live life wondering about these things. We are supposed to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you”. Jesus’s words are plain. Seek God, seek His righteousness and God will provide for us these things. It may not look like we want it to, or in the timing we desire it to be, but God will provide for us, he is faithful!

Reflect: Am I anxious about the things of this world, my possessions, my income, my lifestyle? Am I seeking God first in all areas and seeking his righteousness in my life? What do I need to give over to God that I am grasping hold of out of an anxious fear?

Pray: Lord God, as I seek after you, I realize you are the God of provision, you are the giver of life and the sustainer of life. Help me to relinquish control of money and the desire to store up for myself things here on earth. Help me also to seek more diligently after you and your righteousness. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
