SOME DATES TO RECALL IN THE BRIEF HISTORY OF
CEDAR POINTE BAPTIST CHURCH
Wichita, Kansas
Early in 1984, Bill Tritten, pastor-director in Nebraska interviewed
with the Executive Committee of the Sedgwick Association in Wichita
for the position of Church Starter Strategist with the association
... a brand new outreach tool of the Home Mission Board for the purpose
of starting churches (50,000 by the year 2000). Sedgwick Association
had voted previously to begin 20 new churches by the year 2000. Ken
Emerson, pastor of Sharon Baptist Church (chairman of the association's
Mission Committee) mentioned to Brother Tritten that his church had
already voted to start one of the new churches and suggested he meet
with the church's mission committee while in Wichita. Bill Tritten
did so and vowed that if God led the association to call him, he would
help them in efforts to begin a new church.
After moving to Wichita
late in April, 1984, Bill-met with Ken Emerson to outline a strategy
to begin a new church. Ken mentioned that there were some fourteen
(14) families living east of the church that did not actively support
Sharon and they might provide a nucleus for a new church.
After contacting each
family and finding there was really no desire on their part to help
with the beginning, brother Bill began to visit in the neighborhood,
looking for people who might be interested in a weekly Bible study.
He also contacted new families at Sharon who had been involved with
new mission work in early Fall, 1964, Bill and Rose Ann began a
weekly Bible study in their home. Some four to five families began
to attend. In early 1985, Roger and Vicki Bowden (who were stationed
at McConnell and lived in Base housing) opened their home also.
By Spring, 1985, the Bible studies had outgrown the two homes and
plans were made to find a place (building) where they could begin
Sunday school and worship services.

The USD 259 school district
was contacted regarding using the brand new Beech school on south
Cypress. Tentative plans were made to begin in April, 1985, however
the school was not finished until the end of April, so the beginning
date was set for the first Sunday in May, 1985. The new church was
"born" on May 5, 1985 with 26 in Sunday school and 27
in morning worship. An offering of $610.00 was given. The next Sunday
(Mother's Day) three persons moved their membership. On June 2,
1985, a special commissioning service of the new church was held
in the sponsoring church, Sharon, with Yvonne Keefer, WMU Director
in Kansas-Nebraska being the featured speaker. Brother Tritten served
as pastor for about fifteen months, until he began working with
another church in the association. He supplied from time to time
until the first pastor, David McMullen, was called in May, 1987.
Cedar Pointe was constituted
in December, 1988. Just before that 10 acres of property was purchased
on 31st Street, South. The present building was dedicated in 1991.
In April 2006, the church
classroom capacity was increased. This new addition is now being
used for the classes and other activities. You are quite welcome
to come a take a look.
